This book was a great reminder and also taught me some new things about the GS breed. They're great dogs but if left to their own devices, they can cause many problems. Be the pack leader, remember they are not human and maintain calm, assertive control.

I started to seriously regret the purchase of this book when I read the part about needing a bite suit. Um, only if you are training a police dog to attack, which is not something one thinks of when a dog is described as a great family pet, good with children, etc. if you need a bite sleeve or suit to train your dog, you have really big problems.. This is a weirdly put together book which is very incomplete as a training manual, tries to include too many subjects in a small space, and wanders into training methods inappropriate for a family pet and certainly not detailed enough for their purpose. Your GSD.puppy month by month is worth the money. This is not. At times he talks about the breed as if they aren't really dogs at all, with strange changes in trajectory and disorganized repetition.
Mostly on history of the GSD. Thought I'd learn some new idea on training. But nothing of real use that I didn't know and I am not a trainer for sure. Disappointed.
I had a German Shepherd when I was young and absolutely love the breed. This book is fantastic, I learned so much from it! It isn't just about dog training, it covers EVERYTHING!
Reading about the personality traits has got me thinking we need a new puppy in our house. And this time it is going to be a Shepherd! Highly recommend this book, it is the best book

Repeated information starting new sections - frequently! Reads like a quickly done research paper. Appears to be in general toward German Shepherds as pets but recommends needing body protection in training the dog. Nothing in between or relevant to pet German Shepherd owners. Poorly organized. Waste of a few bucks.
Really, actually decently writting with only a bit of repetition. Fortunately, it IS specific to GSDs. Unfortunately, this book is very broadly written, and not terribly deep. I would never characterize this as "the Complete Guide" but rather an introduction to a fine breed, pet, and companion.
I would reccomend this as light reading for anyone contemplating adding a GSD to their family. As a 30 year GSD owner and one who has trained 5-6 of them over the last 20 years, I found this entertaining, but not as informative. However, again, I've had this breed as a companion most of my life.
